India’s #1 MPV Might Surprise You Not Innova, Carens or XL6!
New Delhi: MPVs, or multi-purpose vehicles, make up a significant chunk of the Indian car market, accounting for 9% of sales in the last fiscal year. This segment boasts popular names like Toyota Innova, Kia Carens, and Maruti Suzuki XL6. However, the undisputed champion remains the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
Launched in 2012, the Ertiga has become a runaway success, surpassing 1 million units sold in India alone. It ranked as the 9th best-selling car in FY24, with nearly 150,000 units sold, averaging over 12,000 units monthly. This dominance continued in April 2024 with strong sales of over 13,500 units.
Part of the Ertiga’s appeal lies in its affordability. Starting at Rs 8.69 lakh (ex-showroom), it’s one of the most budget-friendly 7-seater options in India. It packs a reliable 1.5-liter petrol engine with a smart hybrid system, delivering good power and fuel efficiency. This engine comes with a choice of a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission. There’s also a CNG variant for even greater fuel economy.
Mileage figures are impressive, with the petrol version promising up to 20.51 km/l and the CNG variant reaching a remarkable 26.11 km/kg.
Built on Suzuki’s Heartect platform, the Ertiga offers a range of features, including halogen projector headlamps, LED taillights, alloy wheels, a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, air conditioning vents for the second row, a multi-information display, and essential safety features like airbags, anti-lock braking system, and electronic stability control.
