Kia Carens receives 3-star: (Global NCAP rating)

New Delhi: Kia’s Carens underwent a second round of crash testing by Global NCAP, now adhering to updated protocols, resulting in a 3-star safety rating. Notably, Kia voluntarily submitted the Carens for reevaluation under the new testing guidelines. In the initial assessment, the MPV had received a concerning 0-star rating for adult occupancy protection. This revised evaluation underscores Kia’s commitment to enhancing vehicle safety and underscores the significance of evolving testing standards in promoting road safety.

Kia Carens adult occupancy protection rating:

During a reevaluation under updated protocols, Global NCAP highlighted certain deficiencies in the protection offered by the Kia Carens, particularly noting poor neck protection for the driver and marginal protection for the driver’s chest and knees. As a result, the MPV received a 0-star rating for adult occupancy protection (AOP) for models manufactured between May 2, 2023, and December 11, 2023. Acknowledging these findings, Kia swiftly responded by enhancing the restraint systems to improve neck performance. Subsequent evaluations of models produced after December 11, 2023, demonstrated notable progress in AOP, resulting in a commendable 3-star rating and a score of 22.07 out of a maximum of 34. However, Global NCAP expressed some reservations regarding the overall performance, particularly considering the standard inclusion of six airbags in the Carens. Additionally, both tests revealed concerns regarding body shell integrity in frontal impacts, with the structure deemed unstable under further loading. Notably, the absence of a side pole impact test was attributed to the 3-star rating.

Furthermore, while seat belt reminders are standard for the first and second rows, Global NCAP noted that they only meet requirements for the front row. These findings underscore the ongoing imperative for automotive manufacturers to prioritize and continually improve vehicle safety standards.

Kia Carens child occupancy protection rating:

The Carens’ child occupancy protection (COP) score has also improved: in the first round, the MPV was given a 4-star rating, with a score of 40.92 out of 49, and now – with the improved restraint system – it’s scored 41 out of 49, earning a 5-star COP rating. The Carens comes with six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, rear disc brakes, three-point seat belts for all seats and ISOFIX anchors.
