KTM 990 RC R prototype revealed
New Delhi: KTM has revealed the eagerly anticipated 990 RC R prototype, marking a significant step towards introducing its latest flagship road-homologated sports bike. This unveiling follows KTM’s decision in 2015 to discontinue the RC8 series, redirecting its focus towards naked and adventure motorcycles. Now, with the 990 RC R, KTM aims to build upon the esteemed legacy of the RC8, signaling a bold return to the realm of high-performance road machines.
The 990 RC R will be propelled by a potent 947cc LC8c parallel twin engine, boasting an impressive claimed output of 128hp and 103Nm of torque. Derived from the renowned 990 Duke powerplant, this engine promises exhilarating performance and dynamic capabilities on both road and track. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the 990 RC R features a steel frame and diecast aluminum subframe, strategically engineered to enhance weight distribution towards the front end for heightened agility and stability. KTM has further bolstered the chassis stiffness to optimize stability under acceleration and cornering maneuvers, ensuring uncompromising performance in all conditions.
Equipped with fully adjustable WP Apex open cartridge suspension and cast aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin tires, the 990 RC R offers unparalleled handling and responsiveness. Inspired by KTM’s MotoGP expertise, aerodynamic wings adorn the motorcycle, augmenting stability during braking and cornering maneuvers. In pursuit of ergonomic excellence, KTM engineers have meticulously crafted the 990 RC R to strike a harmonious balance between street and track ergonomics, ensuring optimal comfort and control for riders. Additionally, KTM plans to introduce a track-focused edition of the 990 RC R, stripping away road-legal components in favor of enhanced performance features such as a full-system Akrapovic exhaust and protective elements.
With its bold re-entry into the middleweight segment, KTM is set to challenge established contenders like the Kawasaki ZX6R, Ducati Panigale V2, and the Honda CBR600RR. This strategic move underscores KTM’s commitment to innovation, performance, and pushing the boundaries of motorcycling excellence.
