Skoda compact SUV spied in near production guise

New Delhi: The compact SUV segment is among the most competitive automotive segments in India. Despite low margins, it is a very lucrative category for carmakers due to the prospect of high volumes. Most recently, it was Skoda who announced its entry into this segment, following which there will be as many as 10 different compact SUvs from nine different manufacturers. Skoda has been testing the upcoming sub-4m SUV for a couple of months now, and spy shots of early prototypes suggest it will look like a slightly smaller iteration of the Kushaq. The launch is still about a year away, but here’s what you can expect from the upcoming Skoda compact SUV.

Skoda compact SUV: design, dimensions

Skoda’s upcoming compact SUV, built on the MQB-A0-IN platform shared with the Kushaq and Slavia, will feature a shorter wheelbase to fit into the sub-4m segment. To achieve this, the length will be reduced by approximately 230mm, with front and rear overhangs trimmed accordingly. Design-wise, expect familiar Skoda elements such as a split headlamp setup, slatted grille, and clear surfaces with a kinked glasshouse. The overall appearance may resemble a scaled-down Kushaq, reflecting Skoda’s aim for a cohesive family look.

Skoda compact SUV: interior, features

Skoda’s upcoming SUV will boast more features than its current offerings like the Kushaq and Slavia. Brand director Petr Janeba confirmed additions such as a 360-degree camera and an ADAS suite. These enhancements align with Skoda’s aim to equip the compact SUV competitively with well-appointed models like the Nexon and Sonet. Expect the interior to closely resemble that of the Kushaq.

Skoda compact SUV: powertrain, specs

Skoda has confirmed that its upcoming compact SUV will feature a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine generating 115hp and 178Nm of torque. This engine, known for its responsiveness and refinement, offers strong acceleration and impressive fuel efficiency, particularly in a lighter SUV. Both the 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter automatic gearboxes will be available. Notably, the 1.0-liter TSI engine will be the sole engine option, positioning it competitively with its rivals in terms of power and torque, surpassing entry-level engines while slightly trailing some turbo-petrol counterparts.
