Sony Developing New PlayStation Platform for Free-to-Play Mobile Games, Job Listing Reveals

New Delhi: Sony appears to be developing a new platform for free-to-play mobile games, according to a PlayStation job listing. The listing for a Mobile Platform Architect indicates that the role involves designing a platform for “developing, publishing, and operating free-to-play mobile games.” This initiative follows Microsoft’s announcement of its plans to launch an Xbox mobile store in July.

Sony PlayStation Listing Suggests New Plans for Mobile Gaming

Sony is reportedly developing a new platform for free-to-play mobile games, as indicated by a recent PlayStation job listing spotted by TweakTown. The listing details that PlayStation Studios Mobile is seeking an experienced software engineer to lead the design and implementation of Sony’s mobile games platform. This role involves collaborating with internal teams to integrate mobile games with existing PlayStation services.

Key responsibilities for the Mobile Platform Architect position include designing the system architecture and backend services for the mobile games platform and staying abreast of technical innovations and trends in mobile game development. The ideal candidate should have experience in designing APIs or related SDKs and possess a working knowledge of game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine. Although Sony has not officially announced its plans for a free-to-play mobile games platform, the company has been actively exploring the mobile gaming market. In a presentation last year, Sony indicated that several of its internal studios were developing mobile games. The company projected that mobile games would constitute nearly 5 percent of its games portfolio in 2023, with this share expected to increase to 10 percent by 2025.

Sony’s initiatives in mobile gaming come amid similar moves by its rival, Microsoft. Last year, Microsoft completed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard King, the developer and publisher of popular mobile games like Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga. Furthermore, Microsoft announced plans to launch its Xbox mobile gaming store in July, featuring its first-party mobile games, including Candy Crush and Minecraft.
