Thar Goes Big: Mahindra’s 5-Door Armada to Launch with 1.5L Diesel

New Delhi: Mahindra is gearing up to launch the much-anticipated Thar Armada, also known as the Thar 5-door. According to dealer sources, the SUV will debut in the coming months and offer a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine as the base variant. This powertrain mirrors the one found in the existing 3-door Thar RWD, providing a fuel-efficient option for budget-minded buyers.

Mahindra Thar Armada powertrain details

Mahindra’s upcoming Thar Armada (Thar 5-door) is set to receive a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder diesel engine as its base variant. This powertrain choice aligns with the existing 3-door Thar RWD, although the specific tuning (currently 117hp and 300Nm in the 3-door) remains unconfirmed for the Thar Armada. This strategic move positions the Thar Armada as a compelling option for midsize SUV buyers seeking a rugged and fuel-efficient alternative. It directly targets customers considering vehicles like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, while offering a 5-seater layout. Furthermore, the Thar Armada 1.5 diesel serves as a more adventurous counterpart to the Scorpio N within the Mahindra lineup. While details are still emerging, expect higher-tier Thar Armada variants to inherit the Scorpio N’s powertrains: a 175hp, 2.2-liter diesel and a 203hp, 2.0-liter turbo-petrol option. Mahindra will likely offer both 4WD and 2WD configurations alongside manual and automatic transmission choices, catering to a wider range of customer preferences.

Mahindra Thar Armada expected price, rivals

The Thar Armada will be launched in India in the coming months, and will likely carry a slightly higher price point compared to the Scorpio N. It could be priced from around Rs 15 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards, which is over Rs 3 lakh higher than the entry-level 3-door Thar 1.5 diesel RWD. The SUV will rival the recently launched Force Gurkha 5-door and the Maruti Jimny.
