Uttar Pradesh Aims for 80 Crore Tourist Arrivals by 2028 with Enhanced Infrastructure

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh is gearing up to become a major tourist destination with an ambitious plan to welcome 80 crore visitors by 2028. Known for its rich historical and cultural heritage, the state is home to iconic attractions such as the Taj Mahal in Agra and the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. To achieve this goal, the government is implementing significant improvements in tourism infrastructure and local transport.

Recent steps include revitalizing major tourist sites and enhancing transportation facilities. These initiatives have already shown positive results, with over 48 crore travelers visiting the state in 2023. The government’s new target is to boost this number to 80 crore by 2028 and increase the tourism sector’s Gross Value Added (GVA) to ₹70,000 crore from ₹11,000 crore in 2017.

To support this vision, the state is developing 12 new tourism circuits, with efforts including site surveys and gap analyses to identify areas for improvement. This strategic approach aims to enhance visitor experiences and capitalize on Uttar Pradesh’s notable religious tourism sites, including Ayodhya, Kashi, Mathura, and Prayagraj.

The state has also seen a surge in tourist numbers post-COVID-19, with footfall rising from 23 crore in 2016-17 to 48 crore in 2023-24, marking a 51% increase. To accommodate this growth, the government plans to expand lodging options, improve branding, and offer world-class facilities to travelers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s initiative not only seeks to boost tourism but also aims to drive broader industrial development in the region.
