Maruti Suzuki Ordered to Refund Car Price Over Faulty Airbag Incident

New Delhi: A consumer panel in Kerala has ruled in favor of Mohammed Musliar, ordering Maruti Suzuki India Limited to refund the price of a car after its airbag failed to deploy during an accident three years ago.

The Malappuram District Consumer Commission issued the verdict following a complaint by Musliar, stating that the airbag’s failure led to serious injuries during the accident on June 30, 2021. The commission found merit in the complaint, supported by the Motor Vehicle Inspector’s report confirming the airbag malfunction.

As per the commission’s order, Maruti Suzuki is directed to refund INR 4,35,854, the vehicle’s price, along with INR 20,000 as litigation costs. Failure to comply within a month will result in a 9% interest penalty, as stated by the commission.

This ruling underscores the importance of vehicle safety standards and consumer protection, emphasizing the accountability of manufacturers in ensuring the functionality of critical safety features like airbags.
