Sony’s Afeela EV: A Glimpse into the Future of Electric Vehicles Unveiled at CES 2024

New Delhi: Sony and Honda’s collaborative venture, the Afeela Electric Vehicle (EV), took the spotlight at CES 2024, showcasing cutting-edge features that hint at the future of electric mobility.

In a captivating demonstration, the Afeela was driven onto the stage using a PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, adding a touch of gaming flair to the tech show. While the thrilling display may have sparked questions about the feasibility of steering the car with a gaming controller, Sony clarified that it was purely a tech demo, not a feature for end-users.

So, what sets the Afeela apart? The concept EV boasts Unreal Engine 5.3 for its 3D graphics and visuals, creating a futuristic in-car experience. Passengers can access 3D maps, virtual spaces, and augmented reality views, complemented by Sony’s vast media catalog for entertainment during rides or while parked.

The Afeela’s safety features are enhanced by Qualcomm, and it leverages Microsoft’s Azure computing infrastructure and AI technology. Collaborating with Polyphony Digital, known for gaming expertise, Sony incorporates gaming elements into the car’s development.

A standout feature is the massive ultrawide dashboard screen, named the “Media Bar,” extending across the car’s width. This multifunctional display serves as an instrument cluster, infotainment system, and gaming console. It can show information like warnings, battery status, and even display logos from popular Sony titles.

The EV’s capabilities extend to autonomous driving, with advanced driver assistance systems enabling automatic turns, parking, object detection, lane changes, and stopping at pedestrian crossings. A potential ‘Smart Entry’ feature automatically unlocks and opens doors when the owner is in proximity.

Sony’s use of Unreal Engine 5.3 extends beyond visuals, facilitating the training of the Afeela’s multi-camera driver assistance systems. In a gaming twist, Sony demoed a game named “Monster View,” encouraging drivers to interact with virtual elements on the road.

While the Afeela’s official debut is anticipated in 2026, details about availability and pricing remain undisclosed. Sony’s venture into electric cars began in 2020 with the Vision-S 01 prototype, evolving into the Vision-S 02 in 2022.

The Afeela EV’s captivating CES showcase underscores Sony’s commitment to blending gaming innovation, advanced technology, and futuristic design in the realm of electric mobility.
