Top 7 Cars in India Earn 5-Star Safety Rating from Global NCAP

New Delhi: Leading car brands such as Tata, Volkswagen, Skoda, Hyundai, and Mahindra are actively recognizing the importance of car safety to Indian buyers. These brands have recently introduced cars that underwent updated crash tests based on the Global NCAP protocols and achieved an impressive 5-star safety rating. Tata’s latest additions have performed exceptionally well in these tests, and we’ve compiled a list of the top 7 cars that have received the highest safety ratings, establishing themselves as the safest cars manufactured in India.

2023 Tata Harrier/Safari

The 2023 Tata Harrier and Tata Safari facelifts have now become the safest cars produced in India, according to GNCAP. These Tata SUVs have not only achieved 5-star safety ratings for both protecting adult occupants and children, but they have also outperformed other models in the list with the highest scores. Furthermore, their sturdy body shells have been rated as stable, with the capability to endure heavier loads. Both SUVs share common safety features such as up to 6 airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), and standard ISOFIX child seat anchors. The top variants also offer additional features like hill assist, a 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) functionality. More detailed crash test results for these SUVs can be found in this article.

Volkswagen Virtus/Skoda Slavia

The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia are considered the safest sedans manufactured in India, with both achieving a perfect 5-star safety rating in adult and child safety. These sedans are built on the MQB A0 IN platform, specifically designed for India and extensively localized up to 95 percent. Their body shells have also been rated as stable, ensuring they can handle heavier loads. Regarding standard safety features, both sedans come equipped with dual front airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), hill hold assist, 3-point seatbelts, seatbelt reminders for all passengers, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages. Notably, the Virtus has not only excelled in Global NCAP crash tests but has also obtained a full 5-star rating in the Latin NCAP crash test.

Volkswagen Taigun/Skoda Kushaq

The VW-Skoda SUV duo has achieved an impressive 5-star safety rating in both adult and child safety from Global NCAP. However, their adult occupant protection (AOP) score is slightly lower when compared to their sedan counterparts. These SUVs are constructed on the same MQB A0 IN platform as the sedans. The standard safety features of these SUVs include dual front airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), ABS with EBD, 3-point seatbelts, seatbelt reminders for all passengers, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.

Hyundai Verna

The Hyundai Verna is the first-ever Hyundai model produced in India to achieve full 5-star safety ratings in both child and adult safety, as per the Global NCAP crash test. However, there’s an issue; the bodyshell and footwell area of the Verna have been assessed as unstable, indicating their inability to withstand additional loads. In terms of safety features, the Verna includes 6 airbags (standard), electronic stability control (ESC), ABS with EBD, and 3-point seatbelts for all passengers. The top-spec variant of the Verna also offers advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) like forward-collision warning, blind-spot alert, and lane assist. It is important to note that despite having fewer safety features, the Virtus/Slavia duo exhibits better occupant protection scores and a stable bodyshell compared to the Verna.

Mahindra Scorpio N

The Mahindra Scorpio N has achieved an impressive 5-star safety rating for adult protection in the crash test conducted by Global NCAP. However, the SUV received a lower score for child occupant protection (COP), resulting in a 3-star rating for child safety. The body shell integrity and footwell area of the Scorpio N were assessed as stable and capable of handling additional loads. In terms of standard safety features, the SUV is equipped with dual front airbags, electronic stability control with hill assist, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat anchorages.
