New Delhi : Force has unveiled the 2024 Gurkha SUV after much anticipation. Offered in both 3-door and 5-door versions, the former directly competes with the Mahindra Thar. Below is a comparison of their specifications.

When comparing the Mahindra Thar with the Force Gurkha 3-door, the Thar is marginally longer but narrower than the Gurkha. The Thar measures 20mm longer than the Gurkha and has a kerb weight ranging between 1774-1783kg. In contrast, the Gurkha is 10mm wider and has a gross vehicle weight of 2800kg. Additionally, the Gurkha stands over 225mm taller than the Thar, indicating a more imposing presence. While the Gurkha offers a wider front track, it has a narrower rear track compared to the Thar.
Moreover, the Gurkha boasts a shorter turning circle diameter and 50mm extra water wading capacity. In terms of off-road capabilities, the Gurkha has better breakover and departure angles, enhancing its maneuverability over challenging terrain. Conversely, the Thar boasts a superior approach angle, allowing it to tackle steep inclines with ease. The 2024 Gurkha now features a 2.6-liter diesel engine sourced from Mercedes, delivering 140hp and 320Nm of torque. Paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission, it offers standard four-wheel drive.
Comparing diesel variants, the Mahindra Thar’s 2.2-liter engine produces 132hp and 300Nm. It’s available with a 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic. Alternatively, the Thar offers a smaller 1.5-liter diesel engine with 119hp and rear-wheel drive.
Both models feature transfer cases for switching between 2WD and 4WD modes. While the Thar employs ESC-based brake lock differential, the Gurkha offers manual locking for front and rear differentials.

The Mahindra Thar’s diesel variants range from Rs 11.25 lakh for the RWD version to Rs 17.60 lakh for the top-end LX Earth Edition hard-top automatic. Its RWD configuration and smaller engine size qualify for tax benefits, resulting in lower pricing. The 4×4 variants start from Rs 15 lakh.
