Avinash Sable Confident of Olympic Medal After Breaking National Record in 3000m Steeplechase
New Delhi: Avinash Sable, India’s premier 3000m steeplechaser, is entering the Paris Olympics with high hopes and renewed confidence. Sable, who recently shattered his national record, believes he has a genuine shot at winning a medal in the prestigious quadrennial event.
The 29-year-old athlete had a disappointing run at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where he failed to qualify for the finals. However, his journey since then has been marked by remarkable progress and determination. Earlier this month, Sable clocked an impressive 8 minutes and 9.91 seconds at the Paris Diamond League, breaking his previous national record and finishing sixth in a highly competitive field.
Sable’s recent performances have bolstered his confidence and resolve to achieve greater heights at the Paris Olympics. “I don’t want to just participate; I believe I can win a medal,” Sable asserted. “I am working hard with my eyes set on that goal. If everything falls into place, I will win a medal.”
Reflecting on his growth over the past two years, Sable shared that his training and experiences have transformed his perspective. “I used to think Olympic medallists had a unique and difficult approach to training, but my experiences over the past two years have boosted my confidence,” he said in a JioCinema release.
The legendary achievements of Indian athletes like Milkha Singh, Sriram Singh, and PT Usha have been a source of inspiration for Sable. “Their performances at the world level have deeply inspired me. If my role models can excel globally, so can I. I’ve been taught to focus on my progress rather than others. My competition is with my timing,” he emphasized.
Sable’s philosophy of self-improvement has been a driving force behind his success. “My goal has always been self-improvement rather than focusing on the competition. This mindset has allowed me to break the national record ten times,” he noted.
One of the defining moments in Sable’s career came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where he clinched a silver medal, breaking the long-standing Kenyan dominance in the 3000m steeplechase. “My aim at the Commonwealth Games was to compete against the Kenyan athletes. Finishing second by a fraction of a second gave me the confidence that we can compete against the best in the world,” Sable remarked.
As Sable gears up for the Paris Olympics, he remains focused on his training and the lessons learned from his past experiences. With a strong belief in his potential and a clear goal in sight, Sable is determined to make a historic mark and bring home a medal for India.
The Paris Olympics presents an opportunity for Avinash Sable to not only better his record but also to fulfill a dream that has been years in the making. As he steps onto the track, the hopes of a nation will be with him, cheering him on towards Olympic glory.
