BAN win by 3 wickets, eliminate SL from World Cup
Delhi: Chasing 280 runs, Bangladesh defeated Sri Lanka by 3 wickets with 53 balls remaining, and with this, Sri Lanka are eliminated from this ICC Men’s World Cup 2023.Shakib al Hasan’s Bangladesh bat first at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi.
Sri Lanka was all out on the score of 279 runs as Charith Asalanka slammed century to take his team’s score forward. Bangladesh made a comeback in the death overs as Tanzim Hasan Sakib clinched 3 wickets.
Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in the history of international cricket, men’s or women’s, to be dismissed after being timed-out. Mathews took his time getting to the crease during the Sri Lankan innings and when he then asked for a new helmet before facing the first ball, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan appealed and the umpires held it up. Mathews was visibly angry as he walked off and that set the mood for a rather charged evening.
Despite losing early wickets, Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto and captain Shakib Al Hasan’s partnership of 169 runs maintained a steady run rate. Despite further wicket losses, Bangladesh managed to secure victory with three wickets in hand in 41.1 overs. Their win not only sealed the match but also ended Sri Lanka’s hopes of reaching the World Cup Semi-Finals.
For Sri Lanka, Dilshan Madushanka picked three wickets, while Maheesh Theekshana and Angelo Mathews took 2 wickets each. After this win, Bangladesh are now at 7th position, with 4 points and a NRR of (-)1.142, while Sri Lanka slipped to 8th spot with 4 points and a NRR of (-)1.160.
