CAS Dismisses Vinesh Phogat’s Appeal: No Medal for Indian Wrestler
New Delhi: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has upheld its decision to dismiss Vinesh Phogat’s appeal regarding her disqualification from the Women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling final at the Paris Olympics 2024. The appeal, filed on August 7, 2024, sought to secure a joint silver medal for Phogat after she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the mandatory weigh-in prior to her gold medal match against USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt.
CAS’s verdict, signed by Sole Arbitrator Annabelle Bennett, emphasized that the weight regulations are strict and non-negotiable. The court highlighted that these rules apply uniformly to all athletes, with no tolerance for exceeding the limit, regardless of factors like the weight of the singlet or individual physiological conditions. The regulations are clear, and Phogat’s weight exceeded the permissible limit, leading to her disqualification.
In reaction to the decision, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed deep disappointment and shock. The IOA criticized the regulations as “inhumane” and failing to consider the physiological and psychological stresses faced by athletes, particularly women. Usha underscored the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being. The IOA is exploring further legal avenues to challenge the decision and support Phogat.
Despite her disqualification, Phogat had earlier made history by defeating the reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki, becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic finals. However, her hopes of securing a medal were dashed by the weight discrepancy.
