Duleep Trophy 2024: Bengaluru to Host Opening Match; Kohli and Sharma May Feature
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a key change for the 2024 Duleep Trophy, moving one of the opening round matches from Anantapur to Bengaluru. Originally scheduled to commence on September 5 in Anantapur, this shift aims to address logistical challenges and offer top Indian players an opportunity to engage in red-ball cricket before the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The match will now be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, a location more accessible for players and officials. Anantapur, located approximately 230 kilometers from Bengaluru, lacks direct flight connections, which prompted the adjustment. This change is expected to alleviate travel difficulties and provide a more convenient venue for both players and fans.
The inclusion of senior Indian players in the Duleep Trophy is a significant development. While pacer Jasprit Bumrah and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin are unlikely to participate, the possibility of senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma taking part remains open. Their involvement is contingent on their personal decision, with both players having the option to either join the tournament or skip it based on their preferences.
Other prominent cricketers such as Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to be available for varying periods throughout the tournament. Their participation is anticipated to provide valuable experience and preparation ahead of India’s Test series against Bangladesh, starting on September 19 in Chennai, with the second Test scheduled for September 27 in Kanpur.
The Duleep Trophy thus serves as an important prelude for Indian players, offering a crucial opportunity to fine-tune their skills and form ahead of international commitments.
