French Open 2025: Alcaraz, Swiatek, and Sabalenka Advance to Fourth Round Amidst Rising Challenges

The fourth round of the 2025 French Open has commenced, promising an exhilarating weekend for tennis enthusiasts. Top players in both men’s and women’s categories are vying for spots in the quarterfinals.

Carlos Alcaraz vs. Ben Shelton: Clash of Young Titans

Defending champion and second seed Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the fourth round after a four-set victory over Bosnia’s Damir Džumhur, with scores of 6-1, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The match lasted 3 hours and 14 minutes, with Alcaraz displaying dominance in the initial two sets, facing a resurgence from Džumhur in the third, and ultimately securing the win in the fourth set.

Alcaraz is set to face 13th seed Ben Shelton of the USA, who has reached the fourth round of the French Open for the first time in his career. This will be their third encounter, but the first on clay. Alcaraz has won both previous matches. Shelton, however, has shown impressive form this season, clinching his first ATP clay title.

Holger Rune’s Match Marred by Spectator Incident

Denmark’s Holger Rune secured a hard-fought victory over France’s Quentin Halys in a five-set thriller: 4-6, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2. During the match, a spectator attempted to grab Rune’s towel, leading him to express safety concerns to the umpire and threaten to leave the match. The umpire did not remove the spectator, who eventually left voluntarily.

Rune will now face Italy’s eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti in the fourth round. A win would mark Rune’s third quarterfinal appearance at the French Open, having previously reached the last eight in 2022 and 2023.

Iga Świątek vs. Elena Rybakina: Clay Court Queen’s Next Challenge

Poland’s Iga Świątek, the reigning champion, defeated Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-2, 7-5, marking her 24th consecutive win at the French Open. She is now set to face Kazakhstan’s 12th seed Elena Rybakina, who advanced by defeating Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-2.

Świątek and Rybakina have met eight times, each securing four victories. Notably, Rybakina has won both their previous clay court encounters. Their upcoming match is scheduled for Sunday, June 1, on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Amanda Anisimova: Battle of Familiar Foes

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka progressed to the fourth round by defeating Serbia’s Olga Danilović in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Sabalenka dominated early, establishing a 5-0 lead and maintaining control throughout the match.

She will now face 16th seed Amanda Anisimova of the USA. Sabalenka trails in their head-to-head record, with two wins to Anisimova’s five. Anisimova, returning after a hiatus since 2023, is expected to present a formidable challenge. Their match is slated for Sunday, June 1, on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
