Hockey India retires P.R. Sreejesh’s Iconic No. 16 Jersey at Senior Level

New Delhi: Hockey India announced retirement of P.R. Sreejesh’s iconic No. 16 jersey at the senior level on Wednesday. This decision comes after Sreejesh, a goalkeeping stalwart, announced his retirement following his pivotal role in securing India’s second consecutive Olympic bronze at the recently concluded Paris Games.

Sreejesh, widely regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in the history of Indian hockey, has had an illustrious career spanning nearly two decades. His contributions to Indian hockey, particularly his performances in crucial matches, have made him a beloved figure in the sport. The retirement of his jersey number is a rare honor, reserved for athletes who have made an indelible mark on their sport.

Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh confirmed that no senior team player will wear the No. 16 jersey in the future, although the number will remain in circulation at the junior level. This gesture is a testament to Sreejesh’s legacy and the impact he has had on Indian hockey.

In addition to retiring his jersey, Hockey India also announced that the 36-year-old Sreejesh will be taking up the role of the junior national coach. This new responsibility will see Sreejesh guiding and mentoring the next generation of Indian hockey players, ensuring that his experience and knowledge continue to benefit the sport.

Sreejesh’s transition from player to coach marks the beginning of a new chapter in his career, one that promises to be just as influential as his time on the field. His appointment as junior coach is expected to inspire young athletes and strengthen the future of Indian hockey.
