IPL 2025: Final and Qualifier 2 to be held in Ahmedabad; Tournament resumes on May 17

The final and Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will be played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The final is scheduled for June 3. One day prior, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the schedule for the remaining 13 matches of the league, but the venues for the playoffs were not announced.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, Ahmedabad has been selected to host Qualifier 2 on June 1 and the final on June 3. The delay in announcing the playoff venues was due to weather concerns. Before finalizing the schedule, the BCCI was monitoring monsoon activities across the country. The weather department has indicated that there is no expected rainfall in Ahmedabad at the beginning of June.

The IPL was suspended on May 9 due to escalating tensions with Pakistan. The BCCI stated that the country was in a state of war, making the organization of a cricket tournament inappropriate. The tournament will resume on May 17 with the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Bengaluru. Other matches will be held in Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The league stage will conclude on May 27. Two double-header matches are scheduled for Sundays, May 18 and May 25, meaning 13 league matches will be played in 11 days.

A match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, originally scheduled for May 8 in Dharamsala, was postponed due to security concerns arising from attacks by Pakistan. This match will now be played on May 24 in Jaipur.

Revised Schedule and Venues

The remaining 17 matches, including 13 league-stage games and 4 playoff matches, will be played across six cities: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. The playoffs are scheduled as follows

  • Qualifier 1: May 20, 2025, Hyderabad
  • Eliminator: May 21, 2025, Hyderabad
  • Qualifier 2: May 23, 2025, Kolkata
  • Final: May 25, 2025, Kolkata

The final match is scheduled for June 3, 2025, at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The decision to host the final and Qualifier 2 in Ahmedabad was made considering the city’s favorable weather conditions during the early days of June, ensuring minimal chances of rainfall.

Suspension Due to National Security Concerns

The IPL 2025 season was temporarily suspended on May 9 due to escalating military clashes between India and Pakistan, including airstrikes and missile exchanges. The BCCI halted the tournament, stating that the country was in a state of war, making the continuation of the cricket tournament inappropriate. The suspension lasted for a week, during which the situation was closely monitored. Following a fragile ceasefire agreement between the two nations, brokered with diplomatic intervention, the IPL is set to resume on May 17.

Teams and Player Availability

As of now, three teams—Hyderabad, Rajasthan, and Chennai—have been eliminated from the playoff race. The remaining teams are still in contention for the playoffs. Regarding foreign players, many had returned to their home countries during the suspension. The BCCI is in the process of recalling them, though some Australian players might opt out due to the upcoming World Test Championship final.

Why the Matches Are Scheduled in May

The IPL traditionally utilizes the April-May window, a period when no major international cricket series are scheduled. If the remaining matches were not held in May, the BCCI would have had to wait until September, conflicting with other international commitments. Additionally, the World Test Championship final is scheduled to begin on June 11, followed by India’s tour to England starting June 20. To avoid clashes and ensure timely completion, the BCCI decided to resume and conclude the IPL in May.
