Delhi: India continued their impressive form in the ODI World Cup by defeating South Africa with a convincing 243-run victory in Kolkata. This win marked their eighth consecutive victory in the tournament, keeping their unbeaten record intact.
Rohit Sharma won the toss and decided to bat first at the historic Eden Gardens stadium in Kolkata. No change for India while the Proteas make one change in their playing XI. Rohit hit a 24-ball 40 and shared a 62-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill (23) but the Proteas left them fighting at 105 for two after 15 overs. Earlier, Virat Kohli put up yet another monumental innings in trying conditions on his 35th birthday and in the process, he equaled Sachin Tendulkar’s extraordinary record of 49 ODI centuries. It was a subdued celebration from the former India captain, he played through most of the innings in the humidity of Kolkata. His century led the way in India putting up a mammoth total of 326/5 in 50 overs.
India folded South Africa for 83/10 in 27.1 overs after handing them a stiff target of 327. Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav scalped two wickets each, while Mohammed Siraj picked one. Ravindra Jadeja was the architect behind India’s splendid show with ball as he completed a five-wicket haul.
