Jay Shah Elected as ICC Chairman, Becomes Youngest in History
New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has been unanimously elected as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman. Shah, who is 35 years old, will assume the role on December 1, 2024, succeeding Greg Barclay. This appointment makes him the youngest person ever to hold the position of ICC chairman, marking a significant milestone in the history of world cricket administration.
Shah’s election comes as a result of Barclay’s decision not to seek a third term. Shah was the sole nominee for the role, reflecting a strong consensus within the cricketing community. As he prepares to take on this prestigious role, Shah will oversee the ICC’s operations and global cricketing activities just two months before the 2025 Champions Trophy, which is scheduled to take place in Pakistan.
Jay Shah’s journey in cricket administration began in 2009 with the Gujarat Cricket Association. He has served as the BCCI secretary since 2019, securing a second term in 2022. Additionally, Shah has been the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) since 2021 and was re-elected for a second term in 2023. His extensive experience and leadership roles within the cricketing world have been pivotal in his rise to this prominent position.
As Shah steps into his new role, the cricketing world will be keenly observing how his leadership will shape the future of international cricket.
