Neeraj Chopra Aims to Reassert Dominance at Lausanne Diamond League Following Paris Olympics Silver
New Delhi: Neeraj Chopra returns to action just two weeks after securing a silver medal at the Paris Olympics 2024, as he competes in the Lausanne Diamond League event in Switzerland. The men’s javelin throw is scheduled to start at 12:22 AM IST on August 23, 2024.
Chopra, who has firmly established himself as India’s premier athlete, is eager to showcase his prowess following his recent Olympic performance. Despite the silver medal, he was left dissatisfied and is determined to reaffirm his status as the leading figure in javelin throw. Although Arshad Nadeem, the Olympic gold medallist who outperformed Chopra in Paris, will not be competing in Lausanne, the event will still feature formidable competitors such as Anderson Peters (Paris bronze medallist), Jakub Vadlejch, and Julian Weber. With these athletes all in excellent form, the competition is expected to be intense.
Chopra’s participation in Lausanne is part of a strategic decision made after the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. He and his team recognized the importance of continuing their season and maintaining training rather than returning to India immediately. Chopra has also mentioned that he plans to consult a doctor about his persistent groin injury after the Diamond League season concludes in September.
Reflecting on his Olympic experience, Chopra felt that he was within reach of surpassing Nadeem. He noted that his two no-throws during the qualification and final rounds were actually his second and third best throws of the season. He believes that being injury-free is crucial for achieving greater distances and is frustrated by the limitations imposed by his current condition.
Chopra’s appearance at the Lausanne meet will be his second in the Diamond League this season, following his runner-up finish in Doha behind Vadlejch. Currently ranked fourth in the Diamond League standings, Chopra needs to secure a top-six finish to qualify for the season finale in Brussels on September 14. Another Diamond League event is scheduled for September 5 in Zurich.
