Pakistan Eliminated Early from T20 World Cup 2024
New Delhi: Pakistan has been knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the first round, marking their earliest exit from the tournament. Losses to the USA and India, coupled with inclement weather, sealed their fate.
The tournament began poorly for Pakistan. They lost to the USA in a Super Over and then fell short chasing 120 against India, losing by six runs. With no warm-up games and most practice sessions canceled due to rain, Pakistan struggled to find their form.
Their final hope depended on the match between the USA and Ireland in Lauderhill. Unfortunately, rain led to a washout, splitting points between the teams and allowing the USA to advance to the Super Eight alongside India. This outcome also secured the USA’s spot in the 2026 T20 World Cup.
Pakistan’s only win in the tournament was a seven-wicket victory over Canada. They still have one game left against Ireland, who are also out of the tournament due to the washout.
Despite the disappointing exit, Pakistan’s current T20I ranking of seventh guarantees them a place in the next T20 World Cup in 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
This is the earliest Pakistan has been eliminated from a T20 World Cup, having played only three games. In previous tournaments, they have reached at least the semi-finals, except for group-stage exits in 2014 and 2016. Pakistan has reached the finals three times, sharing the record with England, and won the title in 2009.
