PV Sindhu Advances to Pre-Quarterfinals at Paris Olympics with Easy Win
New Delhi: PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, has secured her place in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles badminton event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. On Wednesday, the 29-year-old Sindhu defeated Estonia’s Kristin Kuuba in straight games, 21-5, 21-10, to top her group.
Sindhu, seeded 10th, had already beaten Maldives’ Fathimath Abdul Razzaq 21-9, 21-6 in her opening match. With this victory, Sindhu finished at the top of Group M and remains unbeaten in the group stage.
The format of the competition means that the winner of each of the 16 groups progresses to the Round of 16. Sindhu’s commanding performance against Kuuba demonstrated the clear difference in ranking and skill between the players. Kuuba, ranked 73rd in the world, struggled against the 13th-ranked Sindhu.
In the first game, Sindhu took just 14 minutes to secure a decisive win. Though Kuuba put up a stronger fight in the second game, Sindhu quickly regained control after Kuuba briefly led 2-0. Despite a few extended rallies, Sindhu’s experience and skill were evident as she secured her place in the next round.
Sindhu has previously earned a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze at the Tokyo Games. Her strong performance in Paris adds to her impressive Olympic record.
