R Praggnanandhaa Struggles to Keep Up in Grand Chess Tour, Finishes Last in Rapid

New Delhi: R Praggnanandhaai Struggled to Keep Up in Grand Chess Tour, Finishes Last in Rapid of the Saint Louis Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournament. Despite his usual prowess on the chessboard, this event turned out to be challenging for the young prodigy.

Praggnanandhaa’s difficulties began early in the tournament. Over the course of the first two days, he managed only three draws, with three losses, leaving him with a tough task heading into the final day of the rapid competition. Unfortunately, the third day did not offer any respite for the Indian Grandmaster.

In the seventh round, Praggnanandhaa faced Lenier Dominguez from the United States, a strong opponent who ultimately proved too much for the young Indian to handle. This loss further compounded his struggles in the tournament. His challenges continued in the eighth round when he encountered Hikaru Nakamura, another formidable American player. Nakamura, known for his aggressive and tactical style, also defeated Praggnanandhaa, pushing him further down the standings.

In the final round, Praggnanandhaa played against Alireza Firouzja of France. While he managed to secure a draw, it was not enough to lift him from the bottom of the table. With just four points out of a possible 18, Praggnanandhaa’s performance in the rapid section of the tournament was far below his usual standards. This tournament served as a reminder of the unpredictability of chess, even for a player as talented as Praggnanandhaa.
