Rakshitha Raju Aims for Gold at Paris Paralympics 2024
New Delhi: Rakshitha Raju, a visually impaired athlete from Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka, is gearing up for a historic debut at the Paris Paralympics 2024. Competing in the Women’s 1500m T11 race, Raju will become the first Indian female athlete with a visual impairment to participate in this event, marking a significant milestone in Indian sports.
Raised by her grandmother after the death of her parents, Raju (23) initially knew little about Paris, only America. Her journey from childhood dreams to international athletics showcases her extraordinary resilience and determination. “Winning an Olympic gold is my sole wish now. I want to secure the first gold medal of this season,” Raju stated.
Her athletic journey began with a PT teacher’s encouragement to run, leading her to local races where she soon attracted national attention. Recognized for her talent, she has earned gold medals in the 1500m and 800m events at the World Para Athletics Junior Championships in Switzerland and another gold at the Asian Para Games in Hangzhou.
Sharda Ugra, an independent sports journalist who met Raju at a panel discussion in Bengaluru, praised her as “an enormously talented, determined, and gutsy young woman.” Ugra highlighted Raju’s journey as a powerful example of how sport can transform lives.
The 2024 Paralympics, set to run from August 28 to September 8, will feature India’s largest-ever contingent, with Raju leading the charge for Indian women. Her participation not only signifies a personal triumph but also inspires many across the nation.
