Sachin Tendulkar on Virat Kohli’s Future: ‘Pleased with His Choices’

New Delhi: Virat Kohli, despite falling short of securing a second World Cup title in the recently concluded 2023 edition, left an indelible mark by breaking several records, particularly those previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli’s standout achievement was amassing a staggering 765 runs in the tournament, surpassing Tendulkar’s record for the most runs in a single edition of the World Cup, which stood at 673 runs during the 2003 edition.

In a remarkable feat, Kohli not only equaled Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries but also went on to become the first player to achieve 50 centuries in the format. Tendulkar expressed his satisfaction that this particular milestone remained in Indian hands, stating, “I have seen Virat even before he played for India. And then I have seen him grow from a youngster.” Tendulkar reminisced about a humorous incident where Kohli, upon entering the Indian dressing room for the first time, was convinced by fellow players to adhere to a tradition of touching Tendulkar’s feet. This anecdote highlights the unique journey of Kohli from a promising youngster to a record-breaking stalwart.

At 35 years old, Kohli has communicated to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he will be taking an indefinite break from international white-ball cricket. Tendulkar, however, believes that Kohli has numerous cricketing years ahead of him and plenty more to offer. He expressed his confidence in Kohli’s enduring hunger, desire, and commitment to achieving more for the country. Tendulkar emphasized his delight in the fact that the record for the most ODI centuries continues to belong to India, reiterating, “I am so happy that the record continues to stay with India. I have always said that the record belongs to India and still does.”

The camaraderie between Tendulkar and Kohli, witnessed from Kohli’s early days in the Indian cricketing scene to his remarkable achievements on the global stage, reflects a unique mentor-mentee relationship. Tendulkar’s acknowledgment of Kohli’s growth and success underscores the seamless transition of leadership and excellence within Indian cricket.

As Kohli takes a hiatus from white-ball cricket, the cricketing fraternity eagerly awaits his return, anticipating further milestones and contributions to the sport. Tendulkar’s words of encouragement and optimism regarding Kohli’s future in the game resonate with the sentiment that there is still much more to unfold in the cricketing journey of the prolific Indian batsman.
