West Indies Sweep South Africa with Dominant Eight-Wicket Victory in Rain-Affected Third T20
New Delhi: Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 35 off just 13 balls propelled the West Indies to an eight-wicket victory over South Africa in the rain-shortened third T20I on Tuesday, securing a 3-0 series sweep.
The match, initially delayed by rain for an hour, was reduced to 13 overs per side. South Africa, starting cautiously, was 23-0 when rain interrupted play in the fifth over. Upon resumption, Tristan Stubbs ignited the innings with a blistering 40 from 15 balls, including five fours and three sixes, helping South Africa post a total of 108-4. Stubbs finished the series with an impressive 144 runs at a strike rate of 178.
Pooran responded in kind, smashing two fours and four sixes to give the West Indies a commanding lead. Despite losing two early wickets, the West Indies cruised to victory with 22 balls to spare, thanks to an unbeaten 42 from Shai Hope and 31 not out from Shimron Hetmyer, who shared a 56-run partnership.
Captain Roston Chase expressed his satisfaction with the series outcome, praising his team’s heart and determination. He noted, “We wanted to win the series 3-0, and I just want to thank the guys for the support and the way they played today.”
South Africa’s captain, Aiden Markram, acknowledged the challenging conditions, which were exacerbated by the rain and humidity. Despite these difficulties, he recognized areas where his team needs to improve to perform better in adverse conditions.
The West Indies’ victory continues their dominance over South Africa, marking another sweep in T20 series history between the two teams.
