Future BMW Electric Vehicles to Utilize Rimac Batteries

New Delhi: Rimac Technology, the engineering division of Croatian EV manufacturer Rimac, has announced a key partnership with BMW Group to supply batteries for the next generation of BMW electric cars. This collaboration is an important step for both companies in the electric vehicle (EV) market.

The partnership between Rimac and BMW Group includes the installation of advanced automated production lines for batteries at the Rimac campus in Croatia. The initiative represents Rimac’s largest and most ambitious project to date. A large portion of the facility will be dedicated to this effort, highlighting the importance of battery technology in the EV landscape.

Although specific financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, both companies are committed to advancing the electrification of BMW vehicles. The batteries produced through this partnership are expected to power BMW’s upcoming New Class range of EVs, which will enter production next year.

BMW Group’s current EV battery procurement involves sourcing batteries from five global sites. Additionally, BMW is building new facilities in China, Hungary, Mexico and the US to produce next-generation batteries. Additionally, a facility is being developed in Germany to assemble batteries for BMW EVs manufactured in Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg. These batteries are expected to be integrated into the new class range of EVs from 2025.

In terms of BMW’s electrification plans in India, the company recently opened bookings for the all-electric i5. The i5 will be imported as a completely built unit (CBU) and will be available in the top-spec M60 xDrive trim. Equipped with a dual electric motor generating 601hp and 820Nm torque, this sedan can accelerate from 0-100kph in just 3.8 seconds.

When launched, the i5 will become the fifth all-electric BMW model in India, positioned between the i4 and i7. With no direct rivals upon arrival, the electric sedan is expected to be priced around Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom).

This collaboration between Rimac and BMW underlines the growing importance of battery technology in the automotive industry and signals a promising future for electric mobility. Stay tuned for further developments as BMW continues to advance its electrification efforts.
