Google’s New ‘Gemini Live’ Feature to Operate on Locked Android Phones
Google is developing a new feature for its AI chatbot, Gemini, called “Gemini Live.” This feature will allow users to access the Gemini AI assistant even when other apps are open or when the screen is locked. Announced at Google I/O 2024 as part of Project Astra, Gemini Live is expected to be released later this year.
Key Features of Gemini Live
Background Operation: Users will be able to use Gemini Live while running other apps or even when the phone’s screen is off.
Two-Way Conversational AI: The feature will enable a free-flowing dialogue with the AI, similar to a phone call interface with pause and end buttons at the bottom.
Voice Options: Users can choose from 10 different voices for Gemini and can interrupt the AI mid-conversation. The AI will adapt based on the new input.
Ease of Use: To use Gemini Live with the screen locked, users need to enable the setting. They can end the chat by saying “Stop” or by using a persistent notification displayed during the call.
Development and Availability
The feature, being developed by Google DeepMind under Project Astra, is expected to be available to Gemini Advanced subscribers later this year. It is currently being developed for Android smartphones, with no information on its availability for desktop or iOS devices yet.
This new addition to Google’s AI capabilities promises to enhance user experience by making the Gemini assistant more accessible and versatile.
