Jeep Compass Introduces Powerful 272hp 2.0 Turbo Petrol Engine Globally
New Delhi: Jeep recently strengthened its Compass lineup on the international stage by unveiling a powerful new powertrain option. The latest addition comes in the form of a stronger 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, which promises impressive performance figures that elevate the Compass’ position in its class.
Producing a remarkable 272 horsepower and 400Nm of torque, this new engine positions itself as the most powerful variant in the Compass lineup. Notably, the same turbocharged powerplant is already in use in other Jeep models available in the Indian market such as the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee SUVs. Additionally, the engine is planned to be deployed in the upcoming Jeep Commander, mirroring the Meridian SUV available in India.
Derived from FCA’s (now Stellantis) Global Medium Engine (GME) family, the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine boasts a proven track record. Although initially available in the South American market, it is expected to see widespread adoption, potentially reaching other regions in the future.
Equipped with direct injection and a dual VVT (Variable Valve Timing) setup, the Compass with this powertrain variant accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in a commendable 6.3 seconds. With a top speed of 228 kmph, the SUV offers great performance capabilities. The powerplant is paired with a 9-speed torque converter automatic transmission and features standard full-time 4WD with Mud and Sand driving modes. Furthermore, enhancements like larger 300 mm brake discs and recalibrated shock absorbers contribute to its dynamic prowess.
While the global market accepts this high-performance offering, Indian enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the possible introduction of a petrol-powered Compass version. While Jeep is preparing to re-introduce a petrol variant in India, it is expected to be powered by a smaller 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine, which will generate around 185hp. This anticipated powerplant is scheduled to debut by 2025, coinciding with the launch of the Meridian facelift in the Indian market later this year.
In short, Jeep’s latest move to equip the Compass with a stronger 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine underlines the brand’s commitment to offering attractive performance options across its global lineup. As enthusiasts have been anticipating the arrival of this powertrain in various markets, this marks an important step in the evolution of Jeep’s iconic SUV.
