Sneak Peek: HMD Teases Upcoming Smartphone Launches in India this July
New Delhi: HMD Global, formerly known for selling phones under the Nokia brand, is preparing to introduce devices bearing its own badge while assuring that the Nokia brand is still alive. In a recent event held in Barcelona prior to the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, HMD Global announced its plans to launch three devices under its brand name, making its debut in the global markets, including India, in July of this year. One of these devices is slated to hit the Indian market as early as May. An emphasis on “sustainability and repairability” is at the core of HMD’s strategy for its upcoming smartphones, which are expected to be affordable and easily repairable, eliminating the hassle of separation during screen fixes or other issues.
Ravi Kunwar, Vice President – India & APAC at HMD, expressed confidence in delivering a strong smart 5G portfolio for India and other markets, with further announcements to come. In addition to these smartphones, HMD Global has also joined forces with Mattel to capitalize on the anticipated success of the Barbie film by launching a Barbie-themed flip phone. While detailed specifications remain undisclosed, a sneak peek provided by HMD includes images and videos showcasing the upcoming devices. One of the smartphones shown features a dual rear camera setup, with a slightly protruding rear camera module displaying the HMD icon and the words “Human Mobile Devices.” The branding is subtly designed to maintain the device’s aesthetic appeal. The showcased image demonstrates a grey color option, along with a slightly thicker form factor, a speaker located at the bottom, and the presence of a headphone jack and Type-C port.
Another teaser image reveals a second phone with curved panel and frames, featuring a different style of HMD branding on the rear. Further details about these devices are yet to be revealed. While no visuals of the Barbie flip phone are available, it can be expected to be offered in a pink color variant, aligning with the iconic Barbie brand. Lastly, HMD Global has teased the upcoming launch of a new Nokia feature phone in yellow, promising more information in the coming weeks.
Overall, HMD Global is transitioning from selling Nokia-branded phones to establishing its own brand presence in the market, with an emphasis on sustainability, repairability, and affordability. The company’s partnership with Mattel for the Barbie-themed flip phone demonstrates its intention to explore unique and appealing product offerings. With the upcoming release of these devices, consumers can anticipate a diverse range of smartphones and feature phones catering to different preferences and needs.
