Ahmedabad: In an unprecedented revelation, JD Power’s 2023 India Initial Quality Study (IQS) highlights the emerging dynamism of the country’s automotive industry. The study released outlines the experiences of new vehicle owners in India, highlighting challenges related to design and features.

According to the findings, the MG Astor 71 PP100 has topped the compact SUV segment, highlighting the shared prevalence of design and feature-related issues across the brands in the initial ownership period. The study, conducted in collaboration with Nielsen IQ, indicates a shift from design-focused issues in previous years to a greater emphasis on quality and features.

The study, which measures problems experienced by owners in the first six months of ownership, reveals a remarkable average of 122 PP100 across the industry. Unlike previous years, the 2023 study shows a consistent score, indicating a balanced performance in addressing both design and quality issues.

Further insights from the study point to challenges faced by younger consumers, with those under the age of 30 experiencing more problems with their new vehicles. The average score for this age group is 136 PP100, which is 14 points higher than the industry average. Additionally, first-time vehicle buyers report more problems than those purchasing their second vehicle.

The top performing models in their respective segments include Tata Tiago, Toyota Glanza, Hyundai Aura and Volkswagen Vento. Notably, MG Astor has claimed the headlines with the remarkable 71 PP100, cementing its position in the compact SUV segment.

This year’s study, covering 7,198 new vehicle experiences from January to October 2023, provides comprehensive insights into the evolving landscape of the Indian automotive market. The ranking is based on J.D. Power’s unique methodology, which gives a clear picture of the brand’s performance in terms of problem-solving.
