YouTube in Talks with Record Labels for AI Song Generator Deal
New Delhi: YouTube is negotiating with major record labels to use their songs for training artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The platform, owned by Google, aims to release new AI features by the end of this year. Last year, YouTube tested an AI song generator called Dream Track for Shorts, but it never went public. The current discussions could lead to different AI tools capable of generating music.
According to reports, YouTube is in talks with Sony, Warner, and Universal, offering lump sums of cash for the rights to use their songs. This would allow YouTube’s AI to generate music similar in style to these tracks. However, some artists are worried that this might affect their careers negatively, even though the record labels seem more open to the idea.
One industry executive noted the need to balance innovation with artists’ concerns. Unlike Spotify and Apple, which pay royalties, YouTube is proposing a one-time payment for these rights. The deal would likely not cover all songs from a label but only those from artists who agree to participate.
This initiative is separate from last year’s Dream Track, but the goal remains the same: to develop AI tools that can generate songs. YouTube is planning to collaborate with several artists to train these models, aiming to launch them later this year.
