YouTube Tests New ‘Notes’ Feature to Combat Misinformation
YouTube is experimenting with a new feature called ‘Notes’ that will allow users to add context to videos, similar to the Community Notes feature on X (formerly Twitter). This feature aims to help viewers understand if content is a parody, an outdated video, or a review with newer versions available.
What are ‘Notes’?
YouTube announced that ‘Notes’ will provide easy-to-understand context for videos. For example, notes might clarify if a song is a parody, indicate when a new version of a product is available, or flag older footage misrepresented as current.
How It Works
Initially, this feature is being tested in English in the US. Selected users will receive an invitation via email or Creator Studio to participate in the pilot project. Users will find an “Add note” option below videos, where they can type their notes and hit “Send.” The notes will be anonymous and won’t display the creator’s name.
Submitted notes will be reviewed by third-party evaluators who will rate them as helpful, somewhat helpful, or unhelpful. A bridging-based algorithm will decide which notes get published based on these ratings. Eventually, contributors will also be able to rate notes.
Tips for Helpful Notes
To ensure notes are considered helpful, YouTube suggests using citations, high-quality sources, and addressing the claims directly. Neutral and easy-to-understand language is encouraged to enhance clarity.
This new feature is part of YouTube’s ongoing efforts to combat misinformation and provide viewers with more accurate information.
