Telangana Floods: 9 Dead, 17,000 Evacuated in Andhra Pradesh as Rains Wreak Havoc
New Delhi: Torrential rains have lashed Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for the second consecutive day, resulting in widespread flooding and significant disruptions across both states. In Telangana, nine people have lost their lives in various rain-related incidents, while in Andhra Pradesh, 17,000 residents have been evacuated to safer areas.
Major cities like Hyderabad and Vijayawada are among the most severely affected. Rivers have overflowed, forcing the National and State Disaster Response Forces to evacuate thousands from flooded regions to relief camps. In Telangana’s Mahabubabad district, the entire village of Nallela was inundated late Saturday night, marking the first severe flooding in two decades.
The downpour has also disrupted travel, with 99 trains canceled, several others partially canceled, and 54 trains diverted due to waterlogging on the South Central Railway network. Floodwaters washed away a railway track near Tallapusapally village in Kesamudram Mandal, halting train services in the area.
In response to the ongoing crisis, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu have engaged in emergency meetings to review relief measures. The Telangana government has declared a state-wide closure of educational institutions and has set up a control room to monitor the situation.
Residents in affected regions are urged to stay alert as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for several districts in Telangana, predicting very heavy to extremely heavy rain in the coming days. The IMD has also issued warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall in Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
Local authorities, along with police and revenue officials, are working tirelessly to rescue stranded individuals and clear blocked roads. The situation remains critical, with ongoing efforts to provide food, water, and medical support to those in need.
For assistance, residents in low-lying areas are advised to contact the control rooms established by the state governments.
