Anna Hazare Responds to Arvind Kejriwal’s Arrest: ‘Consequence of His Actions’
New Delhi: Social activist Anna Hazare, a key figure in the anti-corruption movement along with Arvind Kejriwal, expressed his views on the recent arrest of Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Hazare, who was instrumental in advocating the Lokpal Bill in early 2010, commented that Kejriwal’s arrest was a result of his actions.
Hazare, known for his tough stance against corruption, expressed his disappointment about Kejriwal’s position. He highlighted that his previous efforts were directed at dealing with issues such as alcohol consumption, whereas Kejriwal, as Chief Minister of Delhi, was now involved in making alcohol-related policies.
Expressing his disappointment, Hazare emphasized that Kejriwal’s arrest was a result of his own choices and actions. The statement reflects a change in Hazare’s perception of Kejriwal, who has gone from a former ally in the anti-corruption movement to a political figure whose decisions have come under legal scrutiny.
The relationship between Hazare and Kejriwal goes back to their joint efforts during the Lokpal movement, where they mobilized the public to demand transparency and accountability in governance. However, after the culmination of the movement, Kejriwal entered mainstream politics by forming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a decision to which Hazare had earlier expressed reservations.
Kejriwal’s arrest by the ED in a money laundering case linked to excise policies marks a significant development in Indian politics. It is noteworthy that this is the first case of arrest of a serving Chief Minister in the country. The circumstances surrounding Kejriwal’s arrest have sparked debate and reactions across the political spectrum.
While the AAP has rallied behind Kejriwal, saying he will continue to rule from jail and resisting demands for his resignation, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded his resignation on moral grounds. The ED action against Kejriwal comes after he failed to comply with nine summons issued by the agency, further intensifying the political drama over his arrest.
Apart from Hazare’s comments, AAP has alleged that the central government has put Kejriwal’s family under house arrest, increasing tensions and leading to widespread protests in the national capital.
The unfolding events have underlined the complexities of India’s political landscape, raising questions on governance, accountability and the intersection of law and politics. As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how Kejriwal and his party deal with the legal challenges and political fallout arising from his arrest.
