Mahindra Group Explores Global Partnerships for Battery Cell Production in India
New Delhi: Mahindra Group, a prominent player in India’s automotive sector, is strategically positioning itself to strengthen its foothold in the electric vehicle (EV) market by considering partnerships with global brands for battery cell production.
Anish Shah, MD and CEO of Mahindra Group, highlighted the company’s intent to venture into cell manufacturing, emphasizing the strategic importance of this sector. “One area that we continue to look at more closely is cell manufacturing and that is something where there are various considerations… if we feel it’s essential for us, we will look at a partnership for cell manufacturing,” Shah stated.
Recognizing the capital-intensive nature of battery production, Shah indicated Mahindra’s openness to collaborating with global technology partners and potentially private equity partners to mitigate financial risks. This strategic approach aligns with Mahindra’s goal to leverage external expertise and resources while expanding its capabilities in the burgeoning EV segment.
Mahindra’s recent agreement with Volkswagen Group underscores its commitment to enhancing its electric vehicle portfolio. The agreement allows Mahindra to utilize key EV components and unified cells from Volkswagen’s MEB architecture for its INGLO platform. This collaboration is expected to bolster Mahindra’s EV lineup, with plans to introduce seven electric vehicles in the Indian market by 2030.
Among the anticipated models are the INGLO-based XUV.e8 and XUV.e9 coupe, along with the BE.05 model. Additionally, Mahindra is reportedly developing electric versions of its popular Scorpio and Bolero vehicles, signaling a significant shift towards sustainable mobility solutions.
The move towards battery cell production in partnership with global entities signifies Mahindra Group’s proactive stance in advancing India’s EV ecosystem. By leveraging international alliances and adopting cutting-edge technologies, Mahindra aims to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility while reinforcing its position as a frontrunner in the Indian automotive industry.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow globally, Mahindra Group’s strategic initiatives underscore its commitment to sustainable innovation and transformative growth in the EV segment, poised to reshape India’s automotive landscape in the coming years.
