Healthcare Workers in Andaman Unite in Protest Against Kolkata’s Doctor Rape and Murder
New Delhi: In a powerful display of solidarity, over 2,000 healthcare workers across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands launched a 24-hour strike on Saturday, protesting the horrific rape and murder of a fellow doctor at a hospital in Kolkata. The protest, organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), has significantly disrupted healthcare services across the islands.
The strike includes a wide range of healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, technicians, and medical students, all united in condemning the brutal crime. The tragic incident in Kolkata has sent shockwaves through the medical community, prompting this large-scale protest in the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
“We strongly condemn the incident that occurred in Kolkata. Since morning, more than 2,000 healthcare workers have joined this 24-hour strike,” said Dr. R Thulasi Dasan, president of the IMA’s Andaman and Nicobar chapter. He emphasized that the protest is a response to the deep sense of outrage and grief felt by the healthcare community over the loss of a colleague in such a violent manner.
Dr. Dasan assured the public that normal medical services will resume the following morning. However, the strike has temporarily impacted healthcare delivery across the islands, with only emergency services being maintained during the protest period.
The IMA and other healthcare associations are using this protest to demand justice for the victim and to raise awareness about the safety concerns faced by healthcare professionals in India. The incident has highlighted the urgent need for stronger protective measures for those working in the medical field.
