MGNREGA is a Testament to Modi’s Rural Betrayal, Claims Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge strongly criticized the central government over its management of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), describing the current state of the scheme as a “living monument” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “betrayal” of rural India. Kharge’s remarks came on the anniversary of the enactment of MGNREGA, which was established by the Congress-led UPA government in 2005 to guarantee the ‘Right to Work’ for millions of rural Indians.

In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Kharge highlighted the significance of MGNREGA, recalling that it was designed to provide much-needed employment opportunities to people in rural areas, ensuring a lifeline for those in need. He pointed out that despite the scheme’s importance, it is now in a dire state due to the government’s neglect and poor handling.

Kharge emphasized that, even today, MGNREGA remains a critical source of livelihood for 13.3 crore active workers across rural India. However, he expressed deep concern over the challenges these workers face, including low wages, a significant reduction in available workdays, and the mass deletion of job cards, which has left many without access to employment.

The Congress president’s sharp criticism underscores the party’s dissatisfaction with the current government’s approach to MGNREGA, a program that has long been regarded as one of India’s most important social safety nets. Kharge’s comments reflect broader concerns about the welfare of rural communities and the future of the scheme that was once a cornerstone of India’s efforts to combat rural poverty.
