Data shows India’s formal job market steadying after early-year volatility, with healthcare and care-economy roles leading gains even as tech hiring continues to soften.

India, 26^th August 2026: Indian job postings on Indeed rose 1.2% in July 2026, following three consecutive months of decline to stand 8.3% higher than a year ago. While postings have been volatile recently, hiring intensity across India remains elevated, with postings still 84% above pre-pandemic levels.

Callam Pickering, Senior Economist, Indeed APAC said, “Indian job postings staged a modest recovery in July, ending three consecutive months of decline. While the rebound was gradual, postings remain well above pre-pandemic levels and continue to outpace other markets Indeed tracks, a sign that India’s formal economy is still expanding at a healthy clip.”

Pickering added, “The real story is beneath the headline number. Healthcare and care-economy roles like medical technicians and childcare are seeing sharp gains, while tech hiring, especially in IT infrastructure and software development, continues to soften. That’s a reminder that even amid strong aggregate growth, employer demand is shifting unevenly across sectors.”

As India’s workforce gradually transitions towards formal employment, job creation in the formal sector continues to outpace overall employment growth nationwide. This structural shift is also why India’s postings trend has stayed stronger than other Indeed markets, with postings 82% above pre-pandemic levels, comfortably ahead of the rest.

Healthcare and care roles lead, tech hiring lags behind

Job postings increased across almost 80% of occupations over the past three months, pointing to hiring strength that runs wider than the headline number suggests.

The strongest gains were seen in: Medical technician (+30%), Childcare (+26%), Physicians & surgeons (+26%), and Therapy (+25%). Tech-related hiring told a different story, with declines led by: IT infrastructure, operations & support (-24%), Software development (-18%), Data & analytics (-14%), and IT systems & solutions (-11%).

Despite the recent pullback, tech postings remain well above pre-pandemic levels overall, though the pace of growth has lagged the broader national trend in recent months.

AI is reshaping job titles well beyond the tech sector

A growing share of job postings are being reshaped by AI, not just in the roles that build AI tools, but in how employers describe jobs that have existed for decades.

Indeed’s analysis of normalised job titles found that 349 distinct job titles in India, around 6.6% of all titles tracked, featured meaningful AI mentions in the March 2026 quarter. That figure has doubled over the past year and nearly quadrupled over two years.

Non-tech occupations now account for 42% of these AI-touched job titles, up from 39% a year earlier and 29% two years ago. The trend suggests AI is moving from a specialist skill set into a mainstream expectation, reshaping long-standing roles rather than only creating new ones.

Outlook remains steady amid a gradual recovery

Indian job postings are showing signs of stabilising after a volatile start to the year. India’s formal economy continues to create jobs at a pace that supports its broader economic transformation, and the growing footprint of AI across both tech and non-tech job titles points to a labour market being reshaped from within.
