Texas Instruments Unveils Breakthrough Automotive Chips for Safer and Smarter Driving

New Delhi: Texas Instruments (TI) has recently introduced cutting-edge semiconductor technology aimed at enhancing safety and intelligence in automobiles. One of their groundbreaking products, the AWR2544 77GHz millimeter-wave radar sensor chip, stands out as the industry’s first for satellite radar architectures. This innovation promises to elevate autonomy levels by boosting sensor fusion and decision-making in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

TI’s new software-programmable driver chips, namely the DRV3946-Q1 and DRV3901-Q1, bring built-in diagnostics and support functional safety for battery management and powertrain systems. These advancements were showcased at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the US.

Fern Yoon, the director of Automotive Systems at Texas Instruments, highlighted the role of semiconductor innovations in advancing automotive systems and contributing to a safer driving experience. Yoon emphasized TI’s collaboration with automakers to integrate reliable and intelligent technology for enhanced vehicle safety.

With automakers increasingly incorporating more sensors to improve safety and autonomy, TI’s AWR2544 single-chip radar sensor caters to the demand for satellite architectures. In this setup, radar sensors deliver semi-processed data to a central processor for ADAS decision-making, utilizing sensor fusion algorithms and 360-degree sensor coverage to achieve heightened vehicle safety.

What sets the AWR2544 apart is its status as the industry’s first single-chip radar sensor with launch-on-package (LOP) technology. LOP technology plays a key role in reducing sensor size by up to 30%, achieved by mounting a 3D waveguide antenna on the opposite side of the printed circuit board. This technology also extends sensor ranges beyond 200m with a single chip. In satellite architectures, these features empower automakers to enhance ADAS intelligence, enabling smarter decisions from greater distances.

The AWR2544 joins TI’s extensive radar sensor portfolio, designed to support various ADAS applications and architectures, including corner, front, imaging, side, and rear radar systems. As the automotive industry continues to evolve, TI’s innovations play a crucial role in reimagining how technology contributes to safer and more intelligent vehicles.
