New Delhi: Manu Bhaker has made history by securing a bronze medal in the Women’s 10m Air Pistol event at the Paris Olympics, marking India’s first medal of these Games and ending a 12-year drought in shooting. Her remarkable achievement underscores the significant impact of the Khelo India initiative on her career.

Bhaker’s bronze makes her the first female Indian shooter to win an Olympic medal and the second overall, following Vijay Kumar’s silver at the London 2012 Olympics. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya attributed Bhaker’s success to the Khelo India program, which provides essential training, infrastructure, and resources, including talent identification, athlete development, and international exposure through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bhaker for her outstanding performance and praised the government’s role in supporting athletes with top-notch facilities and personalized coaching. Modi lauded Bhaker’s historic win, noting her resilience and the significance of her achievement as India’s first female shooting medalist. He highlighted the government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and athlete support.

Modi shared his enthusiasm on social media, celebrating Bhaker’s success and her comeback from a setback at the Tokyo Olympics, where a gun malfunction affected her performance. He described her win as a historic moment for Indian sports and extended his heartfelt congratulations.

Bhaker’s achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of the Khelo India initiative in nurturing and supporting athletic talent, paving the way for future successes on the global stage.
