New Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet Unveiled
New Delhi: Mercedes has pulled the covers off its latest drop-top performance offering, the AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet, aimed squarely at challenging the BMW M440i. This convertible boasts a potent 449hp power output, complemented by bespoke AMG styling enhancements and a range of performance-oriented chassis upgrades.
Design:
The AMG CLE 53 Cabriolet showcases a host of styling revisions to underscore its AMG heritage. It exudes a muscular stance with flared front-wheel arches widening the front track by 58mm compared to the standard CLE. Notable exterior features include an AMG-specific front grille, enhanced front and rear bumpers, enlarged air intakes, quad exhausts, and a selection of new alloy wheel designs, available in 19-inch or 20-inch sizes.
Powertrain:
Equipped with a mild-hybrid powertrain, the CLE 53 Cabriolet inherits the ‘M256’ 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged straight-six engine from the E 53 saloon, augmented by a 48V starter-generator. This setup delivers an impressive 449hp and 560Nm of torque, with an over-boost function temporarily boosting torque to 600Nm for quick bursts. Accelerating from 0-100kph in just 4.4 seconds, it outpaces rivals like the BMW M440i and Ford Mustang GT. The top speed is electronically limited to 250kph, extendable to 270kph with an optional AMG performance package. Power is transmitted via a torque-vectoring four-wheel-drive system and a nine-speed gearbox.

The CLE 53 Cabriolet boasts rear-wheel steering as standard, twin-chamber dampers for minimised body roll, and larger brakes for enhanced stopping power. An optional AMG performance package adds features like red brake callipers, drift mode, and a ‘race start’ function for brisker acceleration. Noteworthy comfort features include the Mercedes Aircap system, directing airflow away from occupants’ heads, and a fabric roof that can be raised or lowered in just 20 seconds. Inside, it sports an 11.9-inch touchscreen display, adjustable for optimal visibility.
