Reliance Jio has launched Jio SpaceFiber.
Delhi: Reliance Jio has launched Jio SpaceFiber, a satellite internet service that provides gigabit speeds to thus far unconnected areas of India. Jio has collaborated with SES, a satellite communications business, to gain access to SES’s O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites, which are the only MEO satellites capable of delivering fiber-like internet services from space. This collaboration is not new; in early 2022, Jio and SES launched a joint company called Jio Space Technology Limited.SES is the first company in the world to successfully operate and commercialize satellites in two orbits, geostationary orbit (GEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO). SES has over 70 satellites in orbit and provides video and data services to millions of customers worldwide. SES has also partnered with other big names, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Honeywell, Hughes Network Systems, and SpaceX.
Jio will first deploy SpaceFiber in four of India’s most remote locations: Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chhattisgarh, Nabarangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. Jio has not indicated where SpaceFiber will expand next, but it is expected to do so fast. Notably, this is the first time an Indian firm has provided gigabit internet via satellite.
